Sand Spurs vs. Goat Heads vs. Grass Burrs: How to Identify What's Attacking Your Yard

Quick answer: goat heads are hard, horned pods from a flat, spreading broadleaf plant; sand spurs are spiky burrs on what looks like ordinary grass; grass burrs are their smaller cousins on lawn grasses. All three stab feet, stick to fur, and flatten bike tires — and all three can be removed the same way: lift the burrs off the ground before they reseed.

How do I identify goat heads (puncturevine)?

Look at the plant, not just the burr. Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris) grows flat along the ground in a spreading mat with small, fern-like leaves and little yellow flowers. The burr is the giveaway: a hard, woody pod with two to four sharp horns — the classic “goat head” shape. It thrives in hot, dry, disturbed ground: driveway edges, gravel, vacant lots, and thin lawns.

How do I identify sand spurs (sandburs)?

Sandburs (Cenchrus species) are a grass. They blend into your lawn until mid-season, when seed stalks appear carrying clusters of round, spiny burrs that grab socks, shoelaces, and pet fur. They favor sandy, dry soil and thin, stressed turf.

What about grass burrs and tackweed?

“Grass burr” is a catch-all for the smaller spiky seeds from burr-bearing lawn grasses — same family of problem as sandburs. “Tackweed” is a common regional name for puncturevine/goat heads. If it hurts to step on it, it qualifies.

Why does identification matter?

Because the plant treatment differs — goat heads are a broadleaf you can pull by the taproot, while sandburs are a grass that mostly needs thicker turf and pre-emergent — but the burr problem is identical: seeds on the ground that stay sharp and viable for years. Whichever you have, the ground has to be cleared of burrs or the cycle continues.

What's the fix for all three?

A burr roller. The foam roller lifts goat heads, sand spurs, and grass burrs alike off patios, driveways, and lawns — the foam doesn't care which spiky seed it's grabbing. Use a push model for patios, driveways, and small-to-medium yards, or a pull-behind model towed behind an ATV or mower for acreage. Then remove the plants (pull goat heads at the root; thicken turf against sandburs) so fewer burrs come back next season.

Identification FAQ

Are goat heads and sand spurs the same? No — goat heads come from a broadleaf plant with horned pods; sand spurs are a burr-bearing grass. One tool removes both.

Which is worse for bike tires? Goat heads — their hard horns puncture tubes. Sand spurs mostly torment feet, socks, and pets.

Do I treat them differently? The plants, yes; the burrs on the ground, no — roll them up either way.
